You do not need a big shop to build skis. Builders on the forum have turned out excellent pairs in a single-car garage, a basement corner, and a mountain farm outbuilding. What matters is a handful of the right tools and a way to keep them from taking over the space.

The space

The workshop thread became one of the forum's most-loved, and its running joke doubles as its thesis:

"There are two kinds of people in the world: those who park their cars in the garage and those who build skis."

Space is a luxury, not a requirement. Many builders share a garage with the car, suspend the press from the ceiling on straps and pulleys to reclaim floor, and simply keep things tidy enough to work.

The planer

Aside from the press, the planer is the tool beginners ask about most, because it does the core profiling. Spiral (helical) cutter heads give the cleanest cut but cost more:

"Spiral head cutters are better but you'll pay a premium. Find one that minimizes sniping."

Snipe — the deeper cut a planer takes at the very start and end of a board — worries newcomers, but experienced builders find it manageable: "snipe is a non issue if your planer is set-up correctly and you support the crib while sending it through." Portable 12–13" benchtop planers from Delta, Ryobi, Rigid and DeWalt all appear in builders' shops; sharp blades matter more than the brand.

Planing cores with sidewalls

The recurring planer headache is sidewalls tearing off during the last passes. The forum's favourite fix is an idler block — a scrap of wood that leads the core into the cutter so the sidewall can't lift and catch:

"SHIF uses scrap pieces of wood as idler pieces which prevent the sidewalls from ripping off. This works great!"

Other builders leave sacrificial sidewall material past the tip, mitre the leading end so the blade has less to grab, run the last stretch with hot glue and duct tape, or switch to a belt sander for the final millimetres. A drum sander or a CNC is the ideal but expensive answer.

A starter tool list

From the shop photos and build threads, the tools that come up again and again are: a band saw, a router (and a straight bit — not a spiral up-cut — for cutting bases), a planer for profiling, a belt sander for the tip and tail, plenty of cheap spring clamps, tile nippers for bending edges, and the safety basics: glasses, a respirator and ear protection.
