My comparison is hard to say cause Im comparing a split to solid.

I might build another one the same but use triax glass and compare weights.

I handed this splitboard over to its owner and he machined the channels. Looks pretty sweet to me.

Outstanding work.

Unfortunately my mate broke the channel board today. He hit a hole in the snow and bounced onto the nose at speed. 100kg+ rider plus camping pack.

It delaminated the aluminium plate, back to the drawing board with that idea ;-)

that sucks. It looked amazing.

Hopefully he didn't get stuck to far out back.

Goz, I think you'd need to use some kind of primer on the aluminum to get it to bond well or maybe some titanal.

He didnt even know it happened. He said he heard a noise immediately after the crash but it wasnt till we got to the car park that I spotted the damage.

I feared this would happen with this design and have scrapped the idea for now

It took a massive amount of stress to break it and under normal conditions it would never break IMO but Im glad it worked out how it did today as it saves me making more boards like that

Aluminum needs to be abraded and etched to get it to bond with epoxy well.

I ground it with a 60 grit flap disc

Falls, nice article. I've toyed with AL and bonding tests over the last couple years with some minor success, but not enough where I felt ready to make a ski. Citric acid with abrading and VDS would be a good test.

Back in the day when I was a cook we avoided using aluminum pots when making tomato sauces as the acid would pit the AL if left in the pot overnight or for long periods of time. (or maybe I'm just a bad cook ;-) )

I have on my to-do list to conduct AL tests with home products that typically have acid in them (vinegar, vinegar/salt solution, soda...).

Im working in Myoko for the season. Snow has just started really.

We had 18cm then 75 cm then 35cm then a day off. Today we have light snow, maybe 10cm or so.

Heres another one. 170cm, 125 edge, 30 nose, 15 tail, 8m sidecut.

100% bamboo core, a bit of carbon tape in there too, super thin and heaps of pop.

3.5kg and it still has the protective sticker on the base so it will come down a bit after the grind.

Well this ended up being my go to board this season, by far the best board I have ever produced. Im surprised to read the old post above and see that it is full bamboo core, I thought there was paulownia in it also.

Everyone who rode it loved it too which is always a great sign.

I've got a baby due in 10 days and a workshop to set up as soon as the snow melts, I'm frothing to build again.

All the best on both fronts. Might be a while until all the snow melts this year on honshu. Good luck with the new arrival. It's a lot of fun (plus some hard work!).
