I've been using UHMW sidewalls, and I like them, but I feel like the finish isn't as clean as I'd like. I'm using a cantilevered router to trim them, but they aren't as smooth as I'd like to see. Any suggestions on this would be helpful.
Would ABS be easier to finish? What are the pros and cons?
i never used uhmw, but in most big ski companies it s the standard material.
most production videos i ve seen they don t mill the flush of the sidewalls, instead they move the ski with autofeed in lateral direction along a sharp blade to cut of left over material.
when i iused abs i milled the sidewalls with a router and a bearing. the result was good. but abs is not abs. there a couple of versions out there, i think the the skiing industrie (crown, iso-sport etc) have abs thats less brittle when its cold. i had couple of abs sheets that were meant for deep drawing, it was really brittle when routering it. could imagine that stuff fails when you ride your skis hard in really cold conditions.
