I've been looking around the internets for info on deriving beam stiffness/strength when comprised of different materials at different orientations. But I have found anything that makes me think I can do it correctly.
Any body know of anything? I'd prefer something online [and free], but I'm not totally against buying a good book. And the math doesn't scare me.
One of the suppliers of fabrics in the US uses this program to analyze its fabrics. It is very good and allows a whole bunch of different combinations of core and types of materials as well as calculating your own. In the simplest sense you can use it to make a comparison between several laminates and or thicknesses. It is a lot more difficult if you are trying to predict exactly how much deflection you will get with a certain layup but if you have an engineering background the results will make sense to you.

Hey all (especially you Swedes) I just got accepted to graduate school in Lulea, Sweden (way up north). I am wondering if any of you are familiar with the snow conditions they get up there so that I can build a couple pairs of skis to take with me. Mostly I am wondering how dry the powder is there, or if they actually get much powder at all. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Greg, I live in Umea, its 270 km south of Lulea. By the way I have been out skiing today. Lots of snow but spring conditions. Make your self a pair of all mountain skis. Here are a few links to skiing inthe northern region:

The nearest from Lulea is Mottsundsbacken its only 10 km from the town. To find real off pist skiing you have to go to the higher region around. Abisko, Bjorkliden and Riksgransen. There all skiing is above the tree line. In Riksgransen there are skiing at least until midsommer and often longer. Fine skiing is also found on Dundret.
