we're thinking of making t-shirts (and stickers) as a means for fund raising to support SkiBuilders.com. anyone interested? good idea or bad? let me hear your thoughts...

My son Cal (*Armada*) and I would love to be able to get a couple of SkiBuilders.com tee shirts. And if SkiBuilders.com is a financial drain on you guys We would be happy to donate. Maybe thru PayPal or via a check/snail mail. I can't adequately express my appreciation to the 3Ks for this great web site. When my son called me at work this summer and told me to check out the SB web site, I was blown away. That night we started planning our skis (and snowboard). This has been a great learning experience for us both and since Cal (jr in hs) plans on being a Mech. Eng., this has been a great educational step forward.

We each have 1 ski out of the press and will be pressing their mates this weekend, weather permitting. We will be posting journal soon.

I would definitely take a shirt, and a few stickers. It is funny because I was actually thinking about stickers today on the lift.

davide: i like your idea. the router and woodcore will be a nice touch. we'll post a design soon...

Wheezer: Kam, Kelvin and i are very delighted to hear that SB has had a positive impact on you and your son. nothing pleases us more than to hear Cal considering a degree in ME! please do not hesitate to contact us with any additional questions. besides, how can you go wrong by questioning three engineers who love to ski? at the very least, the conversation will end up about skiing!

as passionate skiers (and tinkerers), our mission is to bring the art and science of ski building to everyone's garage. we hope that SB will become a hub for sharing information as well as a place for new innovative ideas. there's still a lot more to discover about ski building.

we sincerely appreciate your offer to support SB and its cause. as for donations, at this time we are able to more or less support the site finiancially. we hope that by offering t-shirts and stickers, the funds will help expand/improve SB's resources and capabilities. though we won't turn down donations, they are not expected or required.

Relating to Kam's last post, having this website come up last year during my freshmen year at college and being in ME and being able to relate what I was learning to this was one of hte best things to happen to me. Before I found this site it had always been a dream to make my own skis, and I even started modeling skis in Pro/E after the first day I ever used it in a class. Then I found this site, and have been working on coming up with everything I need to make my own skis. I definitly am int he same boat being a tinerking type guy, and once I get the press completed (this weekend maybe???) I can't wait to start making skis!

definately not the world's first carbonfibre skis though. that would have been early 70's

But maybe it is the first carbon / kevlar-honeycomb core.

As you the core is flexible till it was been laminated.

A company in US (Exe ?) wa using alluminium honeycomb, years ago.

They put the whole mold in a vacum bag, maybe i should do this, seems easier than fussing with taping a sheet down

From what I have heard, the big companies (like K2) pay to the chinese factory about 10/20 time less the price you pay in the shop.

I asked a quotation for 100 of these goggles:

they are at 5.6US$.

I emailed them and finally got some info. They have a two part operation, one in china and the other in australia. The guy from china told me that the minimum order was 500 pairs but didn't give me a price. The guy from australia told me the minimum would be 1000 pairs of a specific design and gave me a rough estimate of $75/ski. He said that would be for a 170cm twin tip with graphics on top and bottom. They can design any ski you want up to 186cm and print your own graphics. Now I just need to come up with the $75000. But I might want three different styles so we better make that $225000.

I wrote to them too, but I asked a quotation for 100 pairs, that is why I did not get any reply. The factory can make 100000 pieces per year, so I suppose they are not really willing to work for small productions.

So when people pay 500$ for a pair of skis, let's say that 200$ go to the shop owner, 200$ to the company who puts the name on the ski (K2, Salomon,...), 50$ to the Chinese Company who made them and the rest is taxes and other expenses (transport is less than 5$).

Cool.

By the way, if you put in 100000$, and you sell the skis (some special design) at 600$, and you sell only half of them, you get back around 700000$. It is better than selling crack.

They are too busy, so they can not produce skis for me till next year.
